1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you dive into this tough job, gather together all the necessary supplies. Safety should be your first priority! You’ll need these pieces of protective gear:

  • plastic gloves
  • googles
  • face mask

Eliminating mice odor is going to require deep cleaning. Assemble the following cleaning supplies:

  • disinfectant
  • detergent
  • bleach
  • pet stain and odor remover
  • carpet cleaning solution
  • antibacterial soap
  • mop
  • wash rags
  • paper towels
  • plastic bags
  • carpet steamer

Even after a deep clean, foul odor will try to linger in the air. Consider adding these optional supplies to your list:

  • spray air fresheners
  • granule-type pet odor removers
  • air freshening dryer sheets

When you’ve got all your supplies together you are ready to start tackling the job!

2. Locate and Remove the Source of the Odor

When the terrible odor seems to take over the whole room (or house!) it can be difficult to tell exactly where it is coming from. This is the tough part. How can you determine the location of the smell? Start by gravitating towards where you think the smell is the strongest. Next, look for stains. Rodents are greasy creatures. They leave behind grease stains, urine stains, and even tiny dirty footprint tracks. The carcass itself can even leak fluid (ew!!) and dry on the affected area leaving a stain.

Another clue to look for bugs. A dead mouse will attract insects such as flies, beetles, or maggots. If you noticed an unexplained presence of flies hanging around, check out that area carefully.

Mice are crafty creatures that can access parts of your home that you can’t. They can squeeze through a crevice the size of a dime! Usually, the foul odor comes from a mouse that died what it got stranded in a tough spot- like inside one of your walls, or pipes. Yikes! These are hard to reach places. If you aren’t up for a major demo project, better call in the experts. Worst case scenario, you tear into a wall only to find no mouse!

3. Remove Any Debris

To eliminate the nasty mouse smell you have to get rid of all evidence that a dead rodent was ever there. This includes removing all debris such as mouse droppings, urine, and nesting material from the area.

DO NOT run an electric sweeper or vacuum over the area. This will kick up dangerous bacteria and cause it to become airborne. Instead, you’ll have to pick it up yourself. Get your protective gear on. Pick up all the mouse droppings and nesting material by hand and tie it up tightly in a plastic bag. Make sure this go out with the trash immediately!

Soak spots that stained with mouse urine with a heavy-duty disinfectant. Bleach is recommended. Allow to soak for a few hours, then rinse off with warm water and a sponge.

4. Use Disinfectant

After all debris has been cleared away, it’s time to disinfect. Think of the entire area as a crime scene, or as if it is under quarantine! Every single surface needs to be scrubbed and wiped down with disinfectant.

Have your wash rags, mop, and high-grade disinfectant solution ready. You’ll want to open a window as you carefully cover every inch of the affected areas. Mice travel in a radius of 25 feet from their nest. Start at ground zero, where you found the dead rodent. Methodically work your way out, 25 feet (or to the edge of the space) in every direction, disinfecting walls, floors, and anything furniture in your path.

5. Steam Clean

If you located the source of the smell in a space that is carpeted, you’ll need to do some steam cleaning. Carpet absorbs and harbors foul odors. The intense steam heat from the carpet cleaning machine will lift and release the odor from the carpet, giving it a deep clean.

You can also use a steam cleaner to release an odor from heavy fabric drapes. Fabric furniture can soak up the awful smell too. Use special upholstery detergent to carefully shampoo fabric furniture and release the odor.

6. Air it Out

An open window and spray air fresheners will freshen up space after all that cleaning! A spray bottle won’t get rid of the smell, but it will help balance things out after the liberal amounts of bleach you used.

Allow fresh air to circulate through an open window for 24 hrs if possible. You want to let fresh air in and send any lingering odor out!
